Missing Category Signals Is Killing Your Visibility
If an AI cannot tell what category you are in, it cannot recommend you. Here is how to find and fix the gap.

AI engines recommend by category. If yours is missing, the model files someone clearer instead.
Quick answer
A category signal tells an AI what kind of product you are. Without it, the model cannot place you, so it cannot recommend you. Many sites lead with a slogan or a benefit and never name the category. That leaves AI guessing. Use the Category Signal Scorecard to check five key spots: your H1, your subheadline, your title tag, your meta description, and your FAQ. Score one point for each spot that names your category. Below five, you have work to do.
What a category signal is
A category signal tells an AI what kind of product you are. It is the plain label a buyer would use.
Common examples are an AI meeting-notes tool, an invoicing app for freelancers, or an AI Visibility Platform. Each one is short, concrete, and easy to repeat.
Why AI needs it
AI engines recommend by category. A buyer asks for the best tool in a category, and the model lists names it can place there.
If your category is missing, the model cannot file you. So it lists someone clearer instead.
The Category Signal Scorecard
Your category should appear in five places. Score one point for each:
- The H1, in the first line.
- The subheadline under it.
- The page title tag.
- The meta description.
- At least one FAQ answer.
Five out of five is the goal. Anything below three is a visibility risk.
Score your site
Open your homepage and check each spot. Be strict.
- If the word for your category is not there, it does not count.
- A benefit or a slogan does not count.
- A clever phrase that needs explaining does not count.
How to fix a low score
Start at the top and work down:
- Rewrite the H1 to name the category and the buyer.
- Echo the category in the subheadline.
- Put the category in the title tag and meta description.
- Add one FAQ that asks what you are and answers with the category.
Change these, then rescan. For the full method, read the complete AI Visibility Guide.
What a good category sentence looks like
Use this shape: product is a category for a buyer.
For example: "AudFlo is an AI Visibility Audit Platform for founders." Clear. Specific. A model can repeat it.
If AI still skips you after this, your problem may be trust, not category. See why ChatGPT recommends competitors or run the thirty-second test.
